Nitrogen cycle in alpine systems

Chronic inputs of nitrogen (N ) deposition can over time lead to  “N saturation”, a condition in which the availability of inorganic N exceeds the N assimilation capacity of biological processes. Alpine communities are considered very sensitive to changes in N deposition because a combination of extreme environmental features generally limit the N uptake and retention capacity of the ecosystem. The potential effects include the acidification of water and soil, nutrient imbalance in plant tissues and a reduced biodiversity.
