Ecological Status

The assessment of the 'Ecological Status' of a water body is a key step in the implementation of the WFD. Fulfillment of  WFD requirements and resources allocation in River Basin Management Plans strictly depend on the appropriate definition of the Ecological State. Several elements involved in this process play a major role in the regulatory framework and providing technical support to Environment Agencies and local authorities.

In this section information on concepts and tools dedicated to assessment of ecological status in river water bodies based on benthic macroinvertebrates will be provided. Criteria for class boundaries definition and comparison and detailed information on classification metrics will be presented.

Classification system MacrOper is also presented and MacrOper.ICM software is provided for download in this section. MacrOper.ICM has been jointly developed with DEB – University of Tuscia and is dedicated to the application of MacrOper assessment system for all Italian river types.
