Sampling methods for aquatic invertebrates

WFD has created new obligations and regulations for the collection (sampling) of water organisms for ecological status classification and comparison among observed communities in different water bodies. The record of abundances of collected taxa, for instance, is now required. Also, the collection of a series of support information is required aiming at improving the comparability of result in different water bodies. The requested standard procedures are thus different in comparison with the ones in use before the WFD. This has asked in recent times for an adjustment of the adopted sampling methods. In this section the sampling methods for wadable rivers, in contraposition to non wadable ones (or only partially accessible), will be described, including information on meso- and micro- habitats and sampling procedures in general.
